Problem

Although NLB Bank Serbia’s IT team was experienced in traditional banking infrastructure, they lacked practical experience with cloud-native technologies and containerization, which are essential for modern digital banking platforms.

Solution

A comprehensive 5-day OpenShift on Azure workshop provided hands-on training in container orchestration, cloud-native architecture, and modern DevOps practices, enabling the team to successfully modernize their banking infrastructure.

Client Background

NLB Bank Serbia is a leading financial institution and subsidiary of NLB Group, one of the largest banking groups in South East Europe. Serving over 500,000 customers through 120+ branches across Serbia, the bank manages assets worth €4.2 billion. As part of its digital transformation strategy, NLB Bank Serbia decided to adopt OpenShift on Azure to modernize its banking infrastructure and enhance service delivery. However, to fully leverage these technologies, the bank recognized the need to upskill its platform and development teams.

Challenge

The NLB Bank Serbia platform team faced several critical challenges in their cloud transformation journey:

Limited Cloud-Native Knowledge: Although the team was proficient in traditional banking infrastructure management, they lacked hands-on experience with containerization, Kubernetes, and cloud-native architecture patterns, which are foundational to OpenShift.

Complex Deployment Processes: Without deep understanding of modern DevOps practices, the team struggled with manual deployment processes, leading to longer release cycles and increased risk of human error in production environments.

Scalability and Performance Issues: The team needed to learn how to effectively scale banking applications and manage resources efficiently within a cloud-native environment to meet growing customer demands.

Security and Compliance Concerns: Banking regulations require strict security controls and compliance measures, which the team needed to implement within the new OpenShift on Azure environment.

Objectives

The key objectives of the upskilling initiative were:

Build Cloud-Native Foundation: Equip the platform team with essential knowledge of OpenShift, Kubernetes, and Azure integration through comprehensive workshop training.

Modernize Deployment Practices: Enable the team to implement automated CI/CD pipelines and streamline application deployment processes using OpenShift’s capabilities.

Enhance Scalability and Performance: Train the team to effectively manage, scale, and optimize banking applications within the OpenShift environment.

Implement Security Best Practices: Ensure the team can maintain banking-grade security and compliance standards in the cloud-native environment.

Solution

To address these challenges, a targeted upskilling program centered around a comprehensive OpenShift on Azure workshop was implemented:

1. Intensive 5-Day Workshop Program:

Day 1 – Foundation & Strategy:

  • Cloud-native architecture principles for banking sector
  • OpenShift and Azure integration fundamentals
  • Security and compliance framework overview
  • Infrastructure assessment and planning sessions

Day 2 – Hands-On Implementation:

  • OpenShift cluster deployment on Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO)
  • Network configuration and security setup
  • Identity and access management integration with Azure AD
  • Storage and backup configuration for banking workloads

Day 3 – Application Modernization:

  • Container migration strategies for banking applications
  • CI/CD pipeline implementation using GitOps
  • Microservices architecture design patterns
  • Database modernization approaches

Day 4 – Security & Compliance:

  • Banking-specific security controls implementation
  • Regulatory compliance automation
  • Monitoring and logging setup
  • Disaster recovery planning and testing

Day 5 – Operations & Optimization:

  • Performance tuning and resource optimization
  • Cost management strategies
  • Team training and knowledge transfer
  • Development of implementation roadmap

2. Post-Workshop Support:

Knowledge Reinforcement: Follow-up sessions were conducted to reinforce key concepts and address challenges encountered during the initial implementation phase.

Mentorship Program: Experienced OpenShift and Azure professionals provided ongoing guidance to help the team navigate complex banking scenarios and optimize platform usage.

3. Process Transformation:

DevOps Integration: The team was guided on implementing modern DevOps practices, including automated testing, continuous integration, and progressive deployment strategies.

Resource Optimization: Training included advanced strategies for optimizing resource allocation, cost management, and scaling applications within the Azure cloud environment.

Security Automation: Implementation of automated security scanning, compliance monitoring, and policy enforcement mechanisms.

Results

The OpenShift on Azure workshop delivered significant improvements for the NLB Bank Serbia platform team:
